Good Mourning

Good Mourning

Good Mourning is a methodological framework developed by artist Nicole Rafiki and health economist Jemimah Yombo. Based on the Congolese mourning tradition Matanga, where those affected meet and unite in mourning through various rituals, artists, art professionals, and the public come together across life experiences, age, profession, socio-economic differences, and ethnicity to process the grief associated with collective losses through joint work with artistic expressions. In 2020 the processes were associated with the killing of George Floyd. The following year, the collective works addressed the 10 years commemoration of the Utøya and Oslo terrorist attacks on 22 July 2011 .

The workshops were led by artists Lidiya Solomon, Marie Cole, Anas Salameh, Khalid Shatta, Dariusz Wojdyga, and Nicole Rafiki.

The project is supported by Fritt Ord, Sparebankstiftelsen, Oslo Municipality, and the Norwegian Arts Council (Kulturrådet).

Collaborators: Kunstplass contemporary, The Intercultural Museum, JOY (Joint Organisation for Youth), UKS and the District of Old Oslo (Bydel Gamle Oslo).
