This artwork was created during my first residency at August House Studios in Johannesburg, where I explored the complexities of my diasporic identity in a city grappling with waves of xenophobic attacks targeting African foreign nationals. I reflected on the performativity of identity markers such as "woman," "African," and "foreigner"—how fluid they are, and how they can either empower or disadvantage you depending on time, place, and context.
